N.Y.C.-History
Today we want to give you some information about the city of the cities - New York.
New York City is located on the Eastern Atlantic coast of the United
States. Dutch founded New York in the year 1624, it wasn`t very big in that time.
The first name of this city was "New Amsterdam" . In 1664 it was claimed by the British and was called “New York“ furthermore it was the first capital before Washington D.C.
There are so many differences and it is the 5 th avenue, the streets full of corners in Greenwich Village, the hopelessness in the Bronx and hundreds of square-miles of extra ordinary wealthy suburbs which made New York to that city that it is today.
Although New York is the most famous city and for European people it is a door to the incredible dimensions of America. From 1882 to 1954 nearly 16 million people past through the famous immigration gates on Ellis Island, N.
Y..Today Ellis Island is a museum and it explains so well the "melting pot" that formed the unique character of N.Y. and the nation .
Because of the permanent stream of immigration in New York exists a very big variety of ethnic groups.
There live Jews, Swedish, people from Texas etc.
Every third inhabitant is born abroad. Today nearly 23 million tourists visit the "Big Apple" every year and more than 8 million people live here. Big Apple is a synonym for a city where live many different nationalities.
Little Italy, Chinatown or Harlem are only the most famous ethnic districts. But many others and bigger once are in Brooklyn, Queens or Bronx.
Chinatown for example is the biggest chinatown in the world. It is a community which doesn`t speak english and which is not influenced by N.Y.s` offices.
The seperate districts in New York are very different. From the Upper West Side, where mostly the rich and wealthy people live, to Greenwich Village, where many artists live.
In Brooklyn and Queens, where the middle income people live, to the Bronx, where drug addicted people, most unemployment and poor live.
New York`s subway was built in 1904. It is over 1000km long and it`s the most necessary transport mechanism for the inhabitants. The city of N.Y.is especially connected to the name Robert Moses.
He was the man who demolite the slums to build more streets.
New York`s most important district is Manhattan with the beautiful skyline.
Manhatten is flanked on its west side by the Hudson River and on the east side by the Harlem River and the East River . It was a forest land in which Indians lived. Many people spend their free time in the 1862 created Central Park which is right in the middle of Manhattan(340 ha). It`s sometimes called "the lungs of N.
Y."
The highest building was the World Trade Center or Twin-Tower. It's 419 m high and 50.000 people worked here. Two third of all imported goods where handled here. The first skyscrapers were built in 1890 by Chrysler,Rockefeller and Trump.
The probably most known building is the Empire State Building(since 1931,381m).
The NYSE in the Wall Street is very important for the financial world and for the political the UN building with General Assembly Building and Secretariat Building. The name "Wall Street" called originally a protection against the british crown.
On Liberty Island is the probably most famous lady of the world " Lady Liberty", it`s a present from France in 1886 and it`s 93 m high.
Most important for the culture of New York is the theatre business. Great theatres, famous shows and musicals are in the center of Manhattan around the Broadway.
Fifth Avenue is another attraction, there are very exclusive and expensive shops, only rich persons from all over the world can afford to buy here .
Also famous is the very big sport stadion, the Madison Square Garden for 20.000 people. The most important sport for the American is football, everybody knows the N.Y. Yankees.
The American say " New York is the city, which never sleeps".
I think N.Y. is a very beautiful city with a lot of famous sights which are interesting to see.
