Ayers Rock
The compact rock provides an overwhelming view with a height of 348 m and a scope of nearly 9 km. It is the biggest Monolith of the world. It is also called the red heart of the continent. In 1872 it was discovered by the Europeans and it has already been a holy shrine of the Aborigines for more than 10 000 years. The deep red Monolith changes its colour at the light of the evening sun. A visit of the Uluru-Kata Tjuta cutural centre is to be recommended.
The exhibition shows the culture, the art and the history of the Aborigines.
Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reef, built of living organisms, is the biggest object in the world. It runs 2000 km parallel to the coast of Queensland. It is composed of more than 2000 simple reefs and more than 700 islands. It is divided into twenty islands, like Dunk Island, Great Keppel Island, Green Island, Heron Island and Lizard Island.
The reef is colonised by various kinds of corals.
It belongs to the most beautiful diving areas of the world. But there are still many dangers for the tourists. For example, the poisonous stone fish, mussels, box jellyfishes and sea snakes. But there are also dangers for the Great Barrier Reef like the pollution or the destruction by the tourists.
Sydney Harbour & Sydney Opera House
Since a day in January in the year 1788, when 11 ships entered Port Jackson, the habour of Sidney has become the vital nerve of the city. A sightseeing tour is to be recommended.
The wonderful curved roof of the Sydney Opera House, which is situated at the Bennelong Point at the south shore, was finished after 14 years work, despite of technical and political problems in the year 1973. It can’t be denied that the Sydney Opera House is one of the most unusual monuments in the world.
The Sydney Habour bridge spreads as the third component of this beautiful townside.
The construction of the bridge was finished by 1932. It is the main connection between the south and the north shore.
Lord Howe Island
Lord Howe Island is a true South Sea paradise, but in winter it can be rather cold.
The volcanic peaks of Mount Gower and Mount Lidgbird surround the island. There you can find beaches, coral reefs and palm forrests. In the lagoon there are more than 500 kinds of fishes. In 1982 the UNESCO appointed Lord Howe Island as a world-nature-heritage. The number of the Lord Howe Island inhabitants is only 200. On Lord Howe Island you can visit museums, play golf and go fishing.
It is the ideal place to dangle one’s soul.
Kimberleys
The bleak Kimberly-region was settled in the 80‘ies of the 19th century. This 350 000 squaremetre big area is divided into the East Kimberleys and the West Kimberleys.
Broome was one of the most important pearl-fishing-harbours. Today it convinces because of the multicultural society and the beautiful beaches. Also you can find the Geikie George National Park.
From Kununurra you can visit the Argyle diamond-mines. A main attraction is the sweet-sop tree (Baobabtree), which stores water. In periods of drought farmers cut the tree and feed their cattle with the tree parts to save them from dying of thirst.
Flinders Ranges
The Flinders Ranges are one of the oldest landscapes in Australia. It runs from Gulf Saint Vincent to Outback. It is situated near Adelaide.
The 1600 million year old peaks were probably higher than the ones of the Himalaya. On the way to Flinders Ranges you can find the town Quorn, where the Pichi Richi Railway is located. Near Hawker you can find the Youramboulla Caves, which accommodate very interesting Aborigines-painting. The main attraction of Flinders Ranges is the Wilpenda Pound, a 80 squaremetre big amphitheatre-formed mountain basin, which surrounds Mary’s peak, which is 1165 m high. Also the Gammon Rangers national park is worth a visit.
