The main characters in the book are Kino, a young and strong man, Juana his wife, Coyotito their son and the doctor.
Kino and Juana lived with their baby in a brush house. One day Coyotito was struck in his shoulder by a Scorpion. They went with Coyotito to the doctor in the city. But the doctor had no time for a poor little Indian.
Kino and Juana went back to the beach. They paddled into the sea. Juana put seaweed on Coyotito´s shoulder. With this she rescued Coyotito. On the sea Kino jumped in and he found a big pearl. The news came round the town, also to the doctor.
In the afternoon the doctor came to the brush houses. He heard of the great pearl and gave Coyotito some capsule. Then he wanted some money from Kino.
At night Kino fought with a man. The men wanted his pearl.
In the morning Kino went to the city to sell the pearl.
The pearl buyers knew also from the great pearl and they had made an agreement. So the pearl buyers wanted too gave him to little money. Kino did not sell the pearl. He wanted to go to the next city and sell it there.
At night Juana went to the sea and wanted to put the pearl back but Kino heard Juana and followed her. Kino took the pearl away from Juana.
Then a dark figure came to Kino. They fought and then Kino got his knife and killed the man. After this it was clear that they must left their home.
The next day in the morning they went north. They walked all night and during the day they relaxed.
Then Kino saw three figures.
They were trackers. They followed them. Kino went to the mountains to avoid the trackers. Kino wanted to kill the trackers. At night Kino slinked to the trackers and throw on the trackers. There was a fight and during this fight a gun killed Coyotito.
Kino and Juana went back to their city and threw the pearl back to the sea.
