- I want to tell you something about Australia
- A. lies on the south half globe in the world
- it's situated in the Pacific Ocean
- A. is the smallest continent and largest island
- It has an area of about 7.6 million square kilometers
- A. has only 16 million people
- it is divided in 6 parts, for example Western Australia, Victoria and Queensland
- The capital is Canberra
- Sydney is the biggest town in Australia
- Sights of Sydney are: the Opera house, Harbour Bridge
- Other big cities are: Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide
- 80 % live in the 10 biggest cities; they're all on the coast
- The currency in A. is 1 Australian Dollar; 1 Australian Dollar is 100 cents
- The native people are the Aborigines
- Aborigines are separated into groups of related families or hordes
- Insects and eggs are recognized as important food
- kangaroos are needed for their meet
- Aboriginals are thought to use sign language, so they can hunt in silence
- Australia was discovered by the English seaman James Cook in 1770
- it became a British prison colony in 1788
- in Australia there are special animals: for example kangaroos and koala bears
- in 1901 the six British colonies became one country
- it's a big exporter of: beef, lamb, wool and wheat
- in A.
there are 160 million sheep
- there are huge sheep- and cattle farms called "stations"
- most of the landscape is wilderness called "outback"
- In A. there is the longest fence in the world- the dingo- fence
- Farmers hate dingo's because they kill thousands of sheep every year
- Aussies, so the Australian called themselves, love surfing, kids learn surfing quite early
- The climate is very different- 1/3 tropical and 2/3 normal with 4 seasons
- The best time for tourists is winter (June to September)
