Today I want to tell you something about the Indian Film Industry, also called Bollywood. The name Bollywood is a mix between the American Film Industry Hollywood and a Indian town Bombay.
Every year Bollywood produces more than 1000 conventional films and more than 2000 short movies. Short movies are often documentary or education films. India is with 7000 cinemas and more than 5000 mobile cinemas the biggest film producer of the world.
The amount of visitors reaches more than 15 million every day!
The cinema in India is not only of commercial interests, but it's also a social and political phenomenon.
Some popular film stars are no longer film stars, they get into politics.
Bollywood is exporting films in more than 100 countries. This big revenue is very important for India, because many people are working in the film industry.
Recently Bollywood is trying to distribute Films in KaZaa, the biggest file sharing network of the world. They do this, as a sign against Hollywood. The American Film Industry is doing every thing against it, and Bollywood for it.
Only 5 % of all films in India are imported.
Indian films are strictly made after the principle of Bollywood, as Satyajit Ray, one of Indias first movie producers, said:
Colours, songs, heartbreaking (herzensbrechend), good girl, bad girl, good boy, bad boy, loveromance (without kissing), tears, laughing, fights and pursuit, - More than 70 % of the Indian films are made with these ingredients. The Indian movies are always pretty long, often more than 3 ? 4 hours.
A good but short example for the Bollywood Style is the film Monsoon Wedding, which was running in German Cinemas. The content of the film is about this:
A family near a nervous break down: Lalit and Pimmi Verda are preparing the wedding for their daughter. This is a usual beginning of a Bollywood production: It develops its own little stories: to laugh, to think and sometimes to cry.
For the celebration, all the parts of the family come together, different people, generations comes together, two different worlds of India ? the traditional and the modern world. In the end the monsoon threats to destroy the wedding party by ending up with a boundless chaos, but finally there is a curious finale.
At the Biennale 2001 in Venecia, Monsoon Wedding received the ?Golden Lion?.
The Indian Institute in Munich sometimes organizes a Bollywood film festival. This time they show a little selection of Indian films.
