Statue of liberty!
Englisch Prüfung "Statue of Liberty" ******
Good Morning Ladies and Gentleman.
My name is ***** and I'd like to tell you about the "Statue of Liberty" as the topic of my today's exam.
The Statue of Liberty is the most famous landmark of New York.
It's a woman with a crown, who holds a torch in her right hand.
Her nickname is "Lady Liberty".
Bartholdi worked more than 21 years at his idea to set a sign for freedom in the whole world.
Together he built it with Gustav Eiffel, who also built the "Eiffelturm" in Paris.
On October 28th 1886 the building was finally inaugurated on the 5 km tall island called "Island of Liberty".
It had been the present of France for the USA to their 100 year-anniversary in 1876, but the building took too long so they got it 10 years later in 1886.
In earlier days, as the people used to travel by ship the first thing what the travellers automatically saw was the Statue of Liberty. Nowadays people travel by plane, so if they want to see the Statue a boat trip would be appropriate to see "Lady Liberty", how the Americans call her.
Emma Lazarus who is a Jewish American poet saw the statue as a flashing light to the world.
She wrote a poem which was carved on the platform until this day.
If you wanted to go inside of the Statue, it was nearly impossible, there were so many people who wanted to go in.
Since the 11th September in 2001 there is too much fear that there could happen a terror attack again so they closed the statue for the public traffic.
Since the 3rd August it is opened partly for the public traffic again.
Some interesting facts:
- Height: 305 feet (93 m), 354 steps lead from the entry to the crown.
- The seven rays of Lady Liberty's crown mean the seven seas and seven continents.
- The book, which the statue holds in her left hand, reads (in Roman numerals) "July 4th, 1776."(That's the date of the Independence Day of the USA)
- There are 25 windows in the crown, which symbolize 25 gemstones found on the earth.
The New Colossus
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
with conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
a mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame,
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
with silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
