The emancipation proclamation
The Emancipation Proclamation - issued on sep. 22, 1862 - went oficially into effect jan 1, 1863 - all slaves in the states which had seceded from the Union were now emancipated - had little immediate effect, but became important later together with the 13th ammendment - didn't have an effect on the slaves who lived in the states loyal to the union - e.p. also allowed for the admittance into the US Military, an unusual opportunity, 200,000 back man enlisted -> gave the north an additional manpower resource - abroad, the proc. turned foreign opinion in favor of northern states for its new commitment to end slavery -> ended any hope of the Conf. of gaining official recognition
